In 2009, Danny was a big guy, at least six feet, solidly built.HP1
Early Appearances
Danny started working as a teenager in the family store, Spearfish Lake Appliance. Later he also worked part time as a brakeman on the C&SL Railroad in High School with his best friend, Josh Archer.RM19 They were both on the football team together and shared John Pacobel's Advanced Biology class where they made the initial tentative identification of a snake found in Kirsten Langenderfer's bathroom as being either a Northern Water Snake or a Gibson's Water Snake. They assist Pam Appleton in looking for further examples.
Danny had known the Ashtenfelter sisters for years as both families belonged to West Turtle Lake Club, but he didn't start dating Marsha until High School. The pair managed to beat Kirsten and Mike McMahon in the finals of the Spearfish Lake mixed doubles championship in 1987.AF29
Danny and Josh both played football in High School, although they were not as good as his sister Brandy. They also played a lot of basketball and Brandy proved she could beat them with one hand actually tied behind her back.FtS2 In the book Bird on the Field his football experience results in his being made an assistant coach on the High School team.
Danny continued to work summers for the railroad while he attended Western State University at Athens. He hurt a knee and was unable to play football,AF33 but he earned a half-ride on a baseball scholarshipSQ1. He also worked as a bartender some evenings, something he continued on occasion after graduating.SQ1
As Brandy's brother, he met Phil Wine and introduced him to Josh, allowing Phil to discover and explore an interest in dogsledding.RM11
Marsha Ashtenfelter
Danny and Marsha got married after college and moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida where he had a job in sales.FtS2 SQ15 By 2000 their marriage had difficulties, not least because she deliberately spoiled most of the relationships between him and his family and friends in Spearfish Lake.FtS38
The book Square One covers how he separated from Marsha in late 2000 and relocated to Antelope Valley Nevada. The laws in Nevada require six weeks of in-state Nevada residency to qualify for a divorce. He is living in one of the rooms at the Sagebrush Motel, right across the highway from the Redlite Ranch Bordello when Art Johnson, the motel owner, introduces him to George Bush, who runs the Redlite. Within an hour Danny is the daytime bartender, waiter and occasional bouncer but he "has to keep his hands off the merchandise".SQ1
Danny was busy bartending the weekend that Max Hawkins had his dogfight with Jennlynn Swift. He worked 19 hours straight and instigated much of the side betting.MC28 After his divorce is final he returns to Spearfish Lake, re-establishes his family connections, and despite several difficulties prospers.
Return to Spearfish Lake
Initially Danny split his working time between working for Josh at the railroad and at the family store. His part time presence at the store provided the introduction to Debbie Elkstalker, the advertising salesperson for the local newspaper. He dates, and later marries her. During this time he slowly took over the day-to-day operation of the old Spearfish Lake Appliance store and helped plan, design and then operate the new Spearfish Lake Appliance and Furniture store (but his father still helps out on occasion).HP7
He also served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, though it is not stated when or for how long, or for how many terms. He continued to work as a very occasional brakeman for the Camden and Spearfish Lake Railroad. Along with Debbie he transcribed all the old journals and published "Man of Memory -- the Journal of the Rev. Dr. Robert Carter among the Shakahatche, 1858-1892". The birth records embedded in the journals reveal that Danny is 1/16th Shakahatche Indian, and a very distant cousin of Debbie. With the help of Debbie and her friends he learned the Shakahatche language, increasing the number speaking the ancient tongue to fifty-two. He helps teach it to others.
He has two children by Debbie, his second wife:SQ51 a son, Sky, was about a year old in January 2004, and another child due in summer.HC2 The second child is also a boy and is named Hunter.HP13 Danny's 1/16 makes the children over 50% indian, and this qualifies them for several tribal benefits.
In 2001, he and Debbie developed a friendship with Randy Clark and Trey Hartwell, despite slight age differences. He loans his suit to Duane MacRae for the Hartwell wedding.PE26
In 2009 he is Chamber President (again?) and hosts a mixer at his store where he introduces Dr. Tricia York to the town of Spearfish Lake, not immediately recognizing her as an old friend.SQ51 HP1
