Debbie Elkstalker is as close as it is now possible to get to being a full-blood Shakahatche Indian;SQ30 and is considered by others to be a tribal shaman.BB36 However The word The People use is ‘katara,’ and there’s no one word that translates it into English very well. ‘Sage’ actually comes pretty close, though, but historian, advisor, rememberer, counselor, mystic, storyteller, mage and, yes, priestess also hit on it a little.SQ30

Debbie is described as "chubby but with a pretty, exotic face, a gift of gab and a wry sense of humor."AC1 She always had a smile on her face, was friendly, and had a wisecrack or two.SQ27

Career

She spent time as a waitress at the Spearfish Lake Cafe, living with her boyfriend Kenny and trying to get some college credit, when she was recruited by Mike McMahon to apply for a job at the Spearfish Lake Record-Herald newspaper. Although the Three Pines reservation is nearby, she lives in the mobile home park.

Debbie is employed as the Assistant Ad Manager at the Record-Herald at the time of the book Andromeda Chained. She is specifically thanked by Wendy Carter for her help in Wendy's writing at the end of that book.

She is still employed at the newspaper in October 2001, although her position is not mentioned.BB36

By 2009, when Square One ends, she was the Advertising Manager.SQ51

She appears in a few scenes in Hiding Patty, including where she officiates at the wedding of Henry McMahon and Dr. Tricia York.HP33
