Gil Evachevski, a former Green Beret, is a recurring character in Wes's books. Gil and his wife Carrie Evachevski (nee Matson) have five children, Jennifer, Garth, Brandy, Tara and Daniel, all of which show up in the books.
Gil Evachevski was born in 1932.SQ43 According to clues in the book Absent Friend Gil graduated from High School and enlisted in the Army in 1951. He desired to join the Artillery like his father but was initially assigned to the Infantry and the Big Red One (1st Infantry Division). He served in Korea with them before transferring to Special Forces where he served in Viet Nam.
Gil and Carrie were married in 1961 and spent the first three years of their marriage, 1961 to 1964, stationed in Germany where Jennifer (1961) and then Garth (1963) were born. Gil was deployed on a tour in Vietnam between 1964 and 1965. From 1965 to 1968 Gil and Carrie were then stationed at Ft. Bragg NC where Brandy was born in April of 1966 and Tara in March of 1968. They were next stationed back in Germany from 1968 until 1971. Their last child, Danny, was born in Germany in 1970.
Gil retired from the Army in 1971 and the family moved back to Spearfish Lake.
Gil was one of the Vietnam Vets who welcomed Steve Augsberg home after his tour in Vietnam.WTLC15
As Gil relates it, he bought Spearfish Lake Appliance in downtown Spearfish Lake in late 1972 just to get out of the house - with five children ranging from one to eleven years old it was hectic.AF5 He (and an occasional part-timer) ran the store until he turned it over to Danny towards the end of the book Square One. They later on bought a new property, built a new store, then relocated and renamed the business to Spearfish Lake Furniture and Appliance.
He along with others in the community had informal self defense meetings each Wednesday evening in the large storage room above the old appliance store. The mayhem continues at the new store.
At one point Gil was the assistant coach for the Spearfish Lake high school wrestling team.DW5
Gil was a main force in returning to Vietnam to locate the remains of Henry Toivo as told in the book Absent Friend.

Gil had taught Candice Archer and her son Cody to shoot pistols at the Spearfish County Sportsman’s Club.SK1 After Cody had shot Jack and Bobby Lufkin Gil debriefed himSK4 and had him shoot again at the range to show he still controlled the gun.SK5
Gil helped train Bree Gravengood in martial arts and self-defence. In the first session he challenged her to think about combat.RFW16 He also taught her to shoot at the Spearfish Lake Sportsman’s Club, and thought she would qualify as expert at West Point.RFW24 After Bree took down Walt Lethbridge Gil told her she now knew she could handle combat, that he thought she had the right stuff.RFW35
