Mary Elkstalker was a Shakahatche Indian back in the 19th Century.SQ43 Although she does not appear in the stories, she is a common ancestor to both the Evachevski family (via Gil Evachevski) and Debbie Elkstalker. She was married to Charles Morton on May 19, 1886 by Reverend Robert Carter, the Presbyterian missionary at Three Pines up through 1892.

Debbie states that "we share a great-great-great grandfather," but Jennifer's research indicates that Danny Evachevski, at least, is connected to Mary Elkstalker (and Charles Morton) by one less generation. Mary and Charles are his Great-Great Grandparents. Assuming that Debbie is the same number of generations removed from Charles and Mary, they are third cousins. If Debbie is actually one more generation removed, she is Danny's third cousin, once removed.

Later, Debbie points out that because Danny brings 1/16 Shakahatche blood to the relationship, were she and Danny to have children, the children would be over 50% Shakahatche, and thus eligible for tribal benefits, which include but are not limited to casino dividends and matching funds to the state grant for college.SQ45
