Summary
Over the next week Dr. York spent a lot of after-closing hours getting familiar with the voice-to-text software system, including adding medical terms to the dictionary. Soon the system turned into a huge and badly needed timesaver.
She’d settled into her new home in the duplex quite well by now - but cooking for one wasn't much fun. Opening a can or microwaving a packaged meal was just making something to eat. As the new doctor in town dinner invitations were initially frequent. The conversations were almost always interesting, and the food usually was better than she would make for herself, but the invitations tapered off with time.
One day in late October, while she was stocking up on frozen tray meals that would feed her even though they didn’t taste that good, Debbie Evachevski spoke up from across the aisle with a dinner invitation. Tricia accepted.
The evening's conversation revolved around the Shakahatche, katara, tribal beliefs, tribal history - including Rev. Dr. Carter, his old-fashioned copperplate handwriting, transcribing thousands of pages of Dr. Carter's journals, his arthritis, and so on, and they’d done it while building a relationship, holding down jobs and raising a family. The project took several years, revolutionized the way many of the Shakahatche people see their history.
Further along in the conversation Danny reveals that Debbie is his second wife and shares some unpleasant observations on his first marriage, which lasted eight years. This leads the discussion into how Danny met Debbie, and how neither one was actively looking.
Later that night when Tricia was in bed she reflected that Danny had lucked out with Debbie, a wide and deep intellect, knowledge and interests. Her thoughts wandered to what if... she had decided to build a relationship with Danny... But what had happened, had happened, and they’d wound up following very different paths.
