Trey Hartwell is a repeating character that first appears in the book Blue Beauty. He is from a small town in Indiana that is only ever referred to as "Bumfuck", but in the real world would be located near Peru, Indiana. Ten minutes after leaving his home he was on US31 and heading south past Grissom AFB.

Trey's name is unusual, it was supposed to be 'Troy', but got mispronounced and misspelled.HC4

Both of Trey's parents (unnamed) continue to live in their first home. His has a brother, Robbie, that he shared a room with for years and doesn't see often enough now. Robbie is now partnered with Shirley. His sister, Carolyn, married Aaron Trilby right out of high school and they have three young children at the time of Blue Beauty.

Trey joined the army after high school, both to get out of his small town and because he couldn't afford college. He was in the Infantry, stationed at Fort Stewart for a couple years before serving in Kosovo for peacekeeping. On returning to the states he was transferred to the First Infantry Division (the Big Red One) at Fort Riley in Kansas. From Ft. Riley, he started taking extension classes with Marienthal College.

Trey first appears in Blue Beauty as a Junior (a 3rd year student) in College. He is four years older than his roommate Justin Blair and most of the other classmates and therefore is considerably more mature. He is majoring in business administration, but determined to do some fun stuff also, he took an "Introduction to Theatre" course in his Freshman (first) year, and from there drifted into sound systems, stage lighting and management. In the second half of his Junior year (December 2000) he was a student in a first year English literature class. After her appearance with Jenny Easton's band on Great Performances on a PBS show he talked his professor, Myleigh Harris into doing a public performance on her harp at the college, which was a smashing success. While in college, he also had a part-time job at a local airport as a airline baggage handler.

While in the army at Ft. Stewart, Trey had done some surfing. He was with some army buddies and surfing at Buddha's, overhearing Myleigh speak, before they were introduced. His revisiting B&G's Surf Shop over the Christmas 2000 holidays led to his introduction to Myleigh's friends and a strong bond with Randy Clark. The visit also provided an introduction to Al Buck which led to summer employment with Canyon Tours.

His association with Myleigh also introduced him to Blake Walworth and Trey became a competent recording engineer working either in the field, such as on Myleigh's Grand Canyon expedition, or in the basement studio at the Walworth's Point Drive home, or the later appliance store studio.

On December 29th 2001, Trey marries Dr. Myleigh Harris, at the home of Jennifer and Blake Walworth, in Spearfish Lake.BB36 PE26

In September 2004, Myleigh was pregnant. She and Trey were expecting their first child to be born in mid-March 2005.HC30 It was a girl, whom they named Celeste.HP15
