In the fall of 2010 he was starting his senior year at Spearfish Lake High School. He was an avid birdwatcher, having caught the bug from Mr. Buckland when he was about 11 years oldBITH6 and had little interest in school sports.
At the start of the summer of 2010, Jack was a loner, usually accompanied by his best friend, the dog Stas, of whom Jack was very fond.BITH1 Before the summer was over, Jack started dating Vixen Hvalchek and became good friends with Summer Trevetheck and Alan Jahnke. He had also earned the enmity of Frenchy LeDroit and his posse.

Jack and Vixen were in the room on Activities Day when Kyle Reed started shooting people. Jack covered Vixen and was hit in the back with a ricocheted fragment of a bullet.SLH27 Vixen used her sweatshirt to put pressure on Milo White's back wound.SLH28 Vixen told Jack that his action covering her showed her how much he cared for her. It looked like a permanent arrangement – but then, it had looked like that for a long time, although wedding bells were clearly a good distance in the future.RFW39
