Kyle Reed was a fifty-one year old street preacher who was apparently homeless. He had graduated from Hawthorne College in 1982 with a degree in theology.^SLH34

He was upset at the changes to the campus since Hawthorne College had closed and Southern Michigan University had been established using the land and buildings.^SLH8

He was arrested for disturbing the peace and given a seventy-two hour psychiatric hold in San Francisco.^SLH18 On release he hitch hiked to Hawthorne intending to preach on the SMU campus. On the way he found a backpack containing a gun and some ammunition, which had been thrown out by Bonnie Lederer.^{SLH24 SLH26}

Finding Activities Day in progress when he arrived on campus he wandered round looking for crowds to preach to. Signs for SMU WICCA SIG nad SMU GLBT SIG confused him about his mision but he decided he was there with a gun to show God's displeasure. “Hear the Word of God!” he yelled. “The time has come to cleanse this evil place for the sin it has committed against the memory of Hawthorne College!” He shot people at both the tables and then at anyone else he could see until stopped by Cody Archer.^SLH27
