Hawthorne

Hawthorne is a fictional town, the nearest big town to Bradford in Michigan, about twenty miles away, although still near the state line to Indiana. It is also the county seat.^{HT2 CAT12}

At least one member of Bradford's Class of 1988, Diane Gritzmaker, lived in Hawthorne.^HT24

• Hawthorne is the home of Briarwood Mall and a wider choice in shopping than Bradford, including a WalMart^HT9

• The Brass Lantern is supposed to be the best restaurant in the town, good enough to draw folks from Braford. It was the location of the Bradford Class of 1988 ten year reunion,^GM2 and the low quality of the meal was remembered at the twenty year reunion^REU1

• Hawthorne County Hospital where Vicky MacRae gave birth to her child Melissa.^HS36 Victims of the shooting at Southern Michigan University were treated there.^SLH31

• Hawthorne Airport was the closest airport to Bradford and used by Jennlynn Swift on occasion.^MC26 However it is small and people still drove to the Detroit Metro Airport for major commercial flights.^HT15

• Southern Michigan University is located in Hawthorne where Susan McMahon and Mizuki Takashita attend^SL2 and Cody Archer and Janice Lufkin consider.^SK32

• Susan McMahon bought a four apartment house to live in while at SMU.^SU27 The rents from the other apartments covered her costs and allowed her to travel to Europe during summer vacations.^SK28 She sold the house to Cody Archer^SLH4 and it was later referred to as The Spearfish Lake House when all apartments were occupied by people from Spearfish Lake.^SLH4

Real Life Notes

There is a real city of Hawthorne in southwestern Los Angeles County, California. The 2010 census showed a population of just over 84000 in an area of 6.1 square miles (16 km2). One interesting trivia about Hawthorne, CA. is that it's the birthplace of the Beach Boys rock group in 1961 - the group that broadcast an image of Southern California as a place of sun, surf and romance. Also there was a weekly hour-long medical drama on the TNT television network called Hawthorne (sometimes stylized HawthoRNe, with the RN is a contrasing color). The show ran for three seasons with the first episode airing on June 16, 2009. The third season cliffhanger episode aired on August 16, 2011. The show was cancelled on September 2, 2011, two weeks after the third season ended, so nobody will ever know how the cliffhanger was resolved.
