Vixen Hvalchek was a resident of Spearfish Lake and often at odds with her mother, most likely because as she explained to her friend Jack Erikson, "church is a big deal in her life and I’ve sort of turned my back on it."^BITH3 Vixen is the main female character in the book Bird in the Hand.

She is described as "short and thin, had long dark hair, goofy glasses, and an acne-scarred face."^BITH2 She enjoys reading fantasy books and worries that she doesn't know what she wants from life yet.

Vixen demonstrated surprisingly good fight skills in contrast to her mother's demands to turn the other cheek.^BITH2

Vixen developed an interest in bird watching as well as in Jack Erikson. Within a few weeks they became an acknowledged couple. When the couple were attacked by Frenchy LeDroit, Matt Effingham and Larry Coopshaw she wielded a can of bear spray with devastating effect on the attackers.^BITH39

Vixen was among the group of students who cornered Frenchy LeDroit after he was released from jail and filmed Alan Jahnke taunting him.^OC5

She also contributed to a gift to Frenchy and Monica Laughton after they were burned out of her house.^OC26

Out of friendship with Alan and Summer, she joined in when they wanted to test their role-playig game.^RFW11

She planned to study wildlife biology at Southern Michigan University with a view to making a living as a birdwatcher or a naturalist or something.^RFW22 She and Jack agreed to share a two-bedroom apartment with Summer Trevetheck and Alan Jahnke in a house owned by Cody and Jan Archer. Before leaving Spearfish Lake they were vague whether they would share as couples or boys and girls.^RFW17 When they moved in there was no question, they were living as couples.^SLH10

When Mary Lou Kempa was shouting at Nancy Halifax, Vixen distracted her. Mary Lou tried the same attack she'd used on Vixen before with the same result that she got her jaw broken.^SLH23

Jack and Vixen were in the room on Activities Day when Kyle Reed started shooting people. Jack covered Vixen and was hit in the back with a ricocheted fragment of a bullet.^SLH27 Vixen used her sweatshirt to put pressure on Milo White's back wound.^SLH28 Vixen told Jack that his action covering her showed her how much he cared for her. He told her it made him realise it too.^SLH36

In the summer after their first year at Southern Michigan Vixen and Jack got internships with a Fish and Wildlife Service project studying cowbirds in southern Indiana.^RFW36

When the Spearfish Lake Marlins football team made it to the state finals in Detroit Jack and Vixen went to watch.^RFW38 After the defeat they drove to Spearfish Lake to welcome the team home abd help them realise what they had achieved.^RFW39 That Christmas Jack and Visxen lived together in his room at the Erikson house without objection from parents. It looked like a permanent arrangement – but then, it had looked like that for a long time, although wedding bells were clearly a good distance in the future.^RFW39
