Alan was a witness to the humilation of Frenchy LeDroit at the Frostee Freeze in the summer of 2010. For the temerity of smiling, Frenchy, with two football teammates Larry Coopshaw and Matthew Effingham, kidnapped Alan, beat him up and left him on a remote stretch on the south side of Spearfish Lake. He was rescued the next morning by Jack Erikson who discovered him totally accidentally.BITH4
Jack described Alan as "small, and even Jack thought he was a little girlish and might be gay, although he’d never had any proof of it. Alan was damn smart, but was put down so much that he tried not to stand out." BITH4

Alan's paternal grandmother and aunt were self-proclaimed followers of witchcraft. His father Tom was not a follower, but "at least paid some homage to it" and allowed his son to spend time with them, learning the Craft.BITH36 This turned out to be a shared interest with Summer, resulting in their "forming a Circle of our own." Alan and Summer tried developing a role playing game of pagans against inquisitors. The first attempt to play it showed some of it needed re-writing and a lot more work was needed.BOF26

Summer and Alan made contact with the Wicca SIG at SMU. On Activities Day they were leaving the room where Kyle Reed was shooting when he turned to shoot at those leaving. One bullet creased Alan's head causing a of of bleeding but little damage.SLH27 He was taken to hospital for stitches. As they were leaving the hospital they saw Elise Simpkins being wheeled in and stopped to pray for her and the others injured by the gunman. They were seen by Reverend Herbert Fowler of the Hawthorne First Methodist Church who offered them a lift back to campus and commended them or praying.SLH31 He asked if he could use them as examples in his sermon the next day, and then asked if they would join his congregation for the morning service.SLH32 They did attend the morning service at Hawthorne First United Methodist Church, and were amazed at the friendly greeting they received.SLH36
