Frostee Freeze

Frostee Freeze is a (real) nation-wide chain of ice cream stores, one of which is in our Spearfish Lake universe. It's located on Lakeshore Drive, across from the beach.^SK34 Spelled Frosty Freeze in Busted Axle Road, 2007 Version and Busted Axle Road.

The town lacked a real fast-food place, but besides soft ice cream, the Frostee Freeze had added a short fast food menu. "It was an old fashioned drive-in that had seen better days, but it had picnic tables sitting around outside; it was a popular hangout for the Spearfish Lake kids, and the obvious place to head when you needed a quick supper."^DW20

"The Spearfish Lake Frostee Freeze was strictly a late spring through early fall affair. In the distant past, or at least so Jack had been told, it had been an A&W (Root Beer), but those days were long gone. Sometime in that long ago it had metamorphosed into a soft ice cream place, and later on a limited menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, and the like had been added. It was still a drive-in, and a number of kids had jobs as carhops, which made it something of a rare bird, and it had actually become something of a tourist attraction.

There were only sixteen covered spots where you could order from the car like it had been done everywhere in the old days, but this time of night on a Friday all of them were filled and there wasn't much hope of finding a spot open. To keep the volume of business up, one of the carhop stations had been converted into a walk-up window where you could place your order, and several picnic tables close to the orange and white building encouraged people to hang around for possible additional business."^BITH2

It was the only real teen hangout, and popular hangout in summer, but it "closed up in the winter and the owner went to Florida."^SK23

It was a particular favorite of Josh Archer, Danny Evachevski, and Amy and Marsha Ashtenfelter in the summer of 1987.^BAR733 Pam Appleton was another patron that summer, getting a drink after looking for Gibson's Water Snake in the sewers.^BAR744

Randy Clark found it a suitable place for a quick burger and fries after working at Clark Construction. It was where he met Nicole Szczerowski for the first time in two years after breaking up in High School.^DW39

Before her accident, Wendy Carter once wore her sister Carole Carter's handcuffs in public down to the store for an ice cream. It was the day before Carole put them on for the start of her experiment.

In 2004, Susan Langenderfer-McMahon and Meagan Szczerowski demonstrated it was still the place for High School students to hang out in the summer.^SU6

In 2008, It was the site where Cody Archer needed to defend himself from an attack by two football players.^SK34

Ashley Keilhorn worked at the Frostee Freeze during the summer of 2010 and observed the incidents that are documented in the book Bird in the Hand. The manager at that time was named Mr. Jorgensen.^BITH5

Matt Effingham stopped his car next to Frenchy LeDroit's truck to talk to him while he was home from the army after Basic Traiining.^OC27

In May 2012 Walt Lethbridge threatened Misty Frankovich and Bree Gravengood with a knife and was put out of action in a couple of seconds by Bree. The owner at that time was Mr. Pederson.^RFW35
