Misty Frankovich was a resident of Spearfish Lake with her parents and older siblings, Bethany and Rusty.

Misty didn’t think much of her brother. He was a jerk and she knew it. He patronized her and ignored her, partly because she was a year younger and partly because she was a girl. She knew his opinion was that nothing girls did was really important unless it was doing something nice for guys. It was clear to her that “something nice” involved a lack of clothing on the girl’s part as a first step, and going on from there.

Misty developed a friendship with Howie Erikson during the summer of 2010, the year before they'd be sophomores at Spearfish Lake High School. Howie thought "Misty wasn't exactly the cutest girl in school, but she wasn't far from it. "^BITH19

Misty was described as wearing her "long, dark red hair in a ponytail". ^BITH19

Barb Erikson approved of Misty as a girlfriend for her son. "Howie had spent a lot of time this summer hanging around with his friends, some of whom were a little rough for her tastes. Maybe Misty could civilize him a little – at fifteen, boys usually needed some civilizing anyway"^BITH22 In this, Misty did help. "If you just keep hanging out with bums like Mike, you might not have me much longer"^BITH40

When the junior varsity football players were raised as a group to varsity,^BOF27 Misty asked their dad to let Rusty play football so he sould provide some protection to her quarteback boyfriend, Howie Erikson.^BOF29

She answered the door to Frenchy LeDroit the day he got out of jail. She told him Rusty had turned to Jesus and was out at church with Mike Kovacs and Steve Sarmeinto.^OC3

Trying to control Howie by following her mother's advice of sometimes the carrot and sometimes the stick she jerked him around until he'd had enough and he dumped her.^RFW10

Attempting to make Howie jealous she started going out with Matt Wadsworth and found him easy to control even though she didn't like him. It had no effect on Howie and when she dumped Matt she took up with Walt Lethbridge who jealously controlled her.^RFW18 She stayed with her sister in Grand Rapids in the summer to hide from Walt, returning when he was sent to jail.^RFW27 Even from jail he controlled Misty's life by letting it be known that any boy going with her would face him when he got out of jail.^RFW28 At the same time her dad ensured that Walt heard she was running round.^RFW40

Matt Wadsworth spread the information he'd got from Rusty Frankovich about how controlling Misty tried to be.^RFW30 She went from being one of the popular girls to being an outcast.^RFW35

When her dad left the family with a load of unpaid bills the cars and house were repossessed. Her mom went to live with Bethany in Grand Rapids and Misty turned to Bree Gravengood for somewhere to stay for the last few months of high school. Bree and her friends supported Misty at school. Misty decided to join the Navy and Bree took her to the recruiter's office.^RFW41
