Bethany Frankovich was a resident of Spearfish Lake with her parents, brother Rusty and sister Misty. She was the oldest of the three, next in line was Rusty, then Misty.

Bethany was the girlfriend of Shay Archer when they were both at Spearfish Lake High School and in their freshman year, when she went to Grand Valley State University while he went to Lake State. Shay had "gone out with her a lot in his last year in high school, but her mother had kept a close watch over her, and had been more than a little relieved when the two of them wound up going to different colleges several hundred miles apart."^SK10

Shay's mother, Candice Archer was not impressed with Bethany, believing that she "seemed rather bossy and demanding, and there had been some times that things hadn't gone all that well between the two."^SK11 Her opinion was the "The girl seemed very manipulative and controlling, and it was clear that back in high school Bethany had used her body to keep Shay tied up in little knots."^SK18

Shay used her connections to the Spearfish Lake gossip channels to impress upon other High School students that his brother, Cody, was not someone to bully.^SK23

Bethany worked together with Shay in the summer after freshman year at the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.^SK10 Their time together didn't work as well as they expected. "She never had the same days off as I did, so we didn't see a lot of each other. But then she got to hanging out with some guy who’s going to college with her, and one thing led to another."^SK32

Bethany used tricks her mother had taught her and she had practiced on Shay to catch a rich husband. The wedding date had set when Derrick told her everything was off. She had no idea what had gone wrong. She had to get a job working the drive-up window at a Taco Bell.^RFW27

When her dad mentioned that Shay Archer was back in Spearfish Lake and working at his dad's accountancy practise her mom encouraged her to try to get together with him.^RFW32 Shay took her to the Three Pines casino for a long weekend. They didn't leave their room and he used her frequently before telling her he was off to his summer job.^RFW35
