Summary
Danny is busy getting back in sync with running the family appliance store and being a part-time railroad brakeman. He helps Josh and Tiffany prepare for the Idatarod by packing food and equipment to ship to Shelly in Alaska, and helps Josh & Phil take the dogs to the airport.
Danny and Tiffany help Candice run the UP-200 where she takes Rookie of the year with another top-10 finish. John arrives to pick them up from Tiffany & Josh's, and jokes about Candice doing the Iditarod. Candice replies "Yep!", and tells John that she's going up to stay with Shelly and provide support at Nome. John doesn't yet know of the long term plans for Candice to race in the Iditarod.
Bud and Jane arrive back and lend the motor home to Gil and Carrie. Before they set off, Jennifer and Blake have the family over for a meal. Everyone coos over Jeremy, eats well, jokes about Brandy's cooking, and discusses what Gil and Carrie would do whilst away. During dinner Jennifer and Blake announce that there would soon be a Hollywood tabloid newspaper story naming him as gay. They explain the background so that the family knows how they intend to deal with it. Tara decides to be more open about her being lesbian (compare Chapter 16 of the book Blue Beauty.
After Gil & Carrie leave, Danny gets a little lonely, although Jennifer and Blake try to help, Danny is aware of how much family life he's missed out on. He goes to the high school basketball games to support Brandy and the team, all the way to the regional finals at Moffatt when a lucky Blair rebound under the net at the buzzer gave the opponents a one-point victory.
Brandy takes off to meet Phil at the Idatarod Race finish line in Nome. Phil finishes 8th, and Blake calls Danny at the store to invite him to a finish party.
