Jane Masterfield was raised in Spearfish Lake and went to elementary school with Bud Ellsberg. She married Harry Masterfield, the long-time Fire Chief for Spearfish Lake. She worked at the Spearfish Lake Bank as a secretary. It is not known if the couple had any children.
Jane was an active member of the Spearfish Lake Women's Club with Donna Clark and Kate Ellsberg. For the 1975 Spearfish Lake Chili Festival, she originally recruited her husband to judge the Chili Contest, but (fortunately for him) he had a hot appendix and had to drop out. Jane replaced him with Kirsten Langenderfer, to her chagrin.AF7
After Donna Clark's death in 1983, Jane served as a trustee for the Donna Clark Memorial Foundation.
Harry and Jane supported their long-time friends Bud and Kate Ellsberg as she was dying slowly of cancer in 1998. Not long after, Harry was diagnosed with cancer and died quickly. When Jane and Bud became a couple after that, the only surprise was the speed. She and Bud travelled together in an RV in the summer of 2000. The couple had plans to get married and possibly buy a house together, one that didn't have strong memories, perhaps out on Point Drive.
