Summary

It was the height of construction season and Randy had several jobs going. The lodge extension at Three Pines was almost routine. The Clark Plywood pellet plant was closed in and the machinery was being installed. Since it was so unusual the Newton house on Windmill Island drew most of Randy’s out-of-office attention.

Rachel had replaced the summer intern that hadn't worked out, initially handling the time sheets while learning other jobs.

Randy was attending all of Jared's Little League baseball games, and only missed a few innings. Nellie was helping Nicole and Randy get familiar with their sailboat. On occasion they’d drop anchor in some isolated spot at the far end of the lake and do some swimming.

Occasionally Dave and Ruth drove up to Spearfish Lake to see Rachel and Jared, and on one visit Randy took them out to Grandfather Brent’s hunting cabin. Inspection revealed the place was sound, but needed work. A couple of workbee weekends involving Ryan, Linda, Nicole, Rachel, Jared, Randy, Dave and Ruth cleaned the place up. In the following weeks Randy had a couple of his carpenters do some side work, just to make sure everything was right.

Joel’s trial date was in early July. He plead guilty and was in and out of the courtroom in five minutes. He ended up with a sentence of five to seven years. Harry Novato informed them that Joel could be out in as little as four years, but a parole board would decide. Rachel could have her divorce finalized in less than a year.

Over lunch, Nicole pointed out that Randy had cleared his schedule for the day in case the trial had gone that direction. Twenty minutes later Randy and Nicole were pushing the sailboat away from the dock. They ended up on Little Woodlark island.
