Jim Wooten is an expert backhoe operator at Clark Construction and has been with the company since around 2000.

Jim and his sister Shirley grew up with their parents in Waldenville, somewhere beyond Camden from Spearfish Lake. Jim underwent a nasty divorce from Carolyn Wooten, an alcoholic, and he relocated to Spearfish Lake as part of his escape. His sister Shirley was best friends with Carolyn's sister growing up and continues to push for a reconciliation, much to Jim's annoyance.

Jim has apparently been enjoying the bachelor life, although he is usually laid off in the winter. He spends it ice fishing and snowmobiling and the like.HC30

Jim first appears in Hannegan's Cove Chapter 23 as the backhoe operator of choice when Randy Clark is building a special and very different home on an island in the middle of a lake for David and Stacy Newton.

He is the main character in the book Winter Layoff where he is the "spark plug" that gets his Aunt Rita and Uncle John Fleming into a replacement house in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

In the last chapter of Winter Layoff he marries Rachel Clark (Randy's sister), who already has one son, Jared Lancaster, from her first marriage. It's mentioned later in the same chapter that Jim and Rachel later have two children of their own.

He adopted Jared after marrying Rachel and Jared chose to change his name to Wooten.RFW2

He met Jared and Howie Erikson after football practice and drove out to Spearfish Signs to collect a sign. While there they witnessed Bree Gravengood's thrilling finish to her Silver badge glider flight.RFW5
