Rita Fleming was a cashier at one of the casinos in Pass Christian, Mississipi until hurricane Kartrina scattered their home in August 2005. Rita and her husband John survived with just the clothes they were wearing and John's wheelchair. Rita's job was also blown away by Katrina. WL4
In December 2005 John and Rita were still staying with his sister, Sharon, and her husband Floyd, in Helena, Arkansas with no prospect that their house would be rebuilt for years if ever.
Both in their sixties they doubt they can get much of a loan to help them reuild.
In Winter Layoff her nephew Jim Wooten, who is layed off from construction work for the winter, is guilt tripped into trying to clear the plot so a new home can be built for John and Rita.
