John Fleming was injured in Vietnam and is stuck in a wheelchair.WL1 "He’d gone back to college, became a bookkeeper, and had made a pretty good living at it." WL3
He lived with his wife Rita in Pass Christian, Mississippi until hurricane Kartrina scattered their home in August 2005. They survived with just the clothes they were wearing and John's wheelchair. John's job was also blown away by Katrina.
In December 2005 he and Rita were still staying with his sister, Sharon, and her husband Floyd, in Helena, Arkansas with no prospect that their house would be rebuilt for years if ever.
Both in their sixties they doubt they can get much of a loan to help them reuild.
In Winter Layoff his nephew Jim Wooten, who is layed off from construction work for the winter, is guilt tripped into trying to clear the plot so a new home can be built for John and Rita.
