Summary
Nicole spends a lot of time with Randy in the gearboat, only leaving during major rapids. They have plenty of time to talk, which contrasts to the loneliness Randy felt on his prior trip in a gearboat. They are a little uncomfortable with the religious revelation experienced by others the day before, but decide they could visit their church more often. Instead they want to talk about Nicole overcoming her fear of whitewater and how the couple can adventure together more often.
After lunch, it's the big event of the day, Lava Falls, the single toughest rapids in the Canyon. Randy decides to take the bubble line, not the easiest path. At the last moment, Nicole joins his raft and Randy must take her with him through a rough ride. Nicole emerges wet but screaming with joy. Moments later they witness Karin at the oars also running the bubble line. They have their chance to gloat over the others that played it safe.
Apart from the rest of the camp that night, Randy and Nicole talk some more. Ashamed of what she missed at the start of the trip, Nicole wants to run the canyon again. Their schedules are in strong conflict and for balance, Nicole wants Randy to go sailing in winter with Crystal and Scooter, but he doesn't like how it would look back in their small hometown.
