Joy Russell and her newlywed husband Ben take a Canyon Tours raft trip in the book Canyon Fires.
Joy was born in Vietnam, but left a few weeks old, adopted out of an orphanage and brought to the USA just days before Saigon fell. She grew up in Tucson, where her adoptive parents still reside.
As an oriental in the southwest, she found escape in on-line games, especially Dragonslayer, where her handle is Portia.
She works as a bookkeeper for Southwest Municipal Insurance and lives in Tempe. She met Ben through the game Dragonslayer. They were slow to reveal their real life side to each other and were very surprised to discover that they live in the same apartment complex. They subsequently discovered the complex is just across the street from Jon and Tanisha Chladek.
One of Ben and Joy's first dates together was to a Dayna Berkshire and Sandy Beach concert. He won a Canyon Tours trip through a raffle, which with a trip to Las Vegas prompted their wedding.
In 2002, the Russells contemplate having kids "in a year or two"; with the prerequisite of moving into a house.GT13 On May 25, 2002, Joy and Ben move into their own house, next door to Jon and Tanisha.GT21
