Summary
Eve explains to classmates how John's experience with other patients at St. Priscillaville comforted them but gave him much more understanding. Since the dorms at Syracuse stayed closed, the three returned to John's apartment at RPI for Cheryl's continued surgical recovery. Late one night, John was crying with remorse, worrying whether he helped Paul all those years ago. He fell asleep in Eve's arms.
The classmates at the Reunion are finally told that the John from Eve's story telling is the same John sitting with them, and that is married to Eve.
Returning to the flashback, we learn that a week after being at Syracuse, John and Chad come to visit. Once Chad and Cheryl start talking mathematics, the pair fall deep into discussions. The couples visited about every other weekend until Spring Break when the four went to Florida together.
Chad, Eve and John graduated with the master's degrees and Chad moved to Syracuse for his doctorate. The couples spent the summer in Albany before John and Eve went to Brown University for their graduate work. To ease the housing issue at Brown, the couple determined to marry. Shae's and Eve's folks were present, but the McClellan's stopped speaking to Cheryl and John required them to be civil if they came, which they decided not to. The wedding was at Susan Riley's home in Endicott, with her as matron of honor, to allow Eve to not have to decide between Shae and Cheryl.
As a surprise twist, John reveals that for spring break of 1993 he flew to Las Vegas to lose his virginity. He just happened to choose the Redlite Ranch and partied with Jennlynn Swift... "She is very competent at her part-time profession, and really knows how to help a man enjoy himself. But you know what? I love my wife so much that the fastest woman in the state of Nevada can't hold a candle to her."
