Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a (real) private research university in upstate New York. It is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world. It is often simply referred to as "Rensselaer" or "RPI".

In the Spearfish Lake universe John McClellan and his roomate Chad attended RPI in 1993, earning Master's degrees in Structural Engineering and Math, respectively.
