Summary
On returning to Michigan Mel learned that Shorty Notwicki had been killed when a drunk driver pushed his car into the way of a train. The group who had gone to Florida had missed the funeral.
Hoss told Frank and Spud he wouldn't be travelling with them this year as he was getting married in early June. They'd set a date when MMSA wold be in Livonia and not racing.
Down two expected drivers for the season Spud returned to New Jersey to try recruiting drivers.
Frank arranged to use a dirt track at Pontiac to test the cars and all of them needed some fiddling. None of the five drivers who had been working on the cars over the winter wanted to change cars this year - they had each tweaked their car.
During the second day of testing Hattie went into labor and Chick took her to the hospital. They packed up the cars, dropped them off and went to keep Chick company. Chick and Hattie named their daughter Carol.
Frank outlined the schedule for the season with visits to Livonia late May/early June to include Hoss's wedding and late July to get ready for fair season.
New drivers had shown up but they were still one short for their first two races ad Pontiac and Owosso so Hoss filled in. At Owosso Skimp Winkelman asked if Frank was looking for a driver so he as taken on.
