In Floydada, Texas he met Hattie and, after a night together, agreed to take her with him on the road.BR1-9 While they were in Indiana during fair season they told the crew she was pregnant and got married. To everyone's surprise the marriage lasted over 50 years.BR1-13
Their daughter Carol was born in March 1951, just before the racing season started.
After the 1951 season, with Hattie pregnant again, Chick accepted an offer from Herb Kralick to train in automatic transmissions and be Herb's specialist.BR1-20

Hattie was pregnant again by Thanksgiving 1953. She and Chick were hoping for a boy this time. Chick was planning to take the GM automatic transmission training with Herb Kralick's approval.BR1-34
