Hattie was an eighteen year old in Floydada, Texas when the MMSA pulled in. She got talkiing with Chick Novesky and, after a night together, he agreed to take her with him on the road.
Following her parents' deaths she had been taken in by her aunt and her husband. The husband had raped her regularly and she had been desparate to get away.BR1-10
While they were in Indiana during fair season Hattie and Chick told the crew she was pregnant and got married. To everyone's surprise the marriage lasted over 50 years.BR1-13
Hattie washed cars and did other chores around the show, and she was sort of like everyone’s little sister.BR1-13
Their daughter Carol was born in March 1951, just before the racing season started.
They stayed with MMSA towing a small travel trailer to live in. Hattie made lunches for the crew instead of someon going out for bread and lunchmeat. When Spud was racing Hattie ran the flag stand.BR1-19
After the 1951 season, with Hattie pregnant again, Chick accepted an offer from Herb Kralick to train in automatic transmissions and be Herb's specialist.
Their second child was another daughter who they named Susan.BR1-23
Hattie was pregnant again by Thanksgiving 1953. She and Chick were hoping for a boy this time.BR1-34
