Summary
After winning the race Mel made time with Rosita and took her back to his hotel room. It was gone midnight when he took her home and let Hoss into the room.
In southern Colorado Carnie told them the booking for the army base at Colorado Springs had been cancelled because of the war in Korea. That was the first anyone had heard of a war, not having radios in their cars or the trucks. That gave them a day off in Colorado Springs and some drove to the top of Pike's Peak.
One day Hattie was nervous as they ordered lunch at a diner, and left before the food was served. Rocky and Mel got the food bagged up to take out. Hattie told them the waitress looked a lot like her aunt. The aunt had let her husband rape Hattie each night which was why she ran with Chick.
As time went on Hattie helped out where she could and became part of the crew.
