Shorty Notwicki was a good guy for a little squirt. Always happy, always ready with a joke.

He was involved in a crash during the race in Independence, Missouri which left his leg in a cast for a couple of months. While the cast was on he was able to drive using a broomstick to shove the clutch.^BR1-9

During the winter he worked for his dad as a meat cutter.^BR1-14

Spring 1951 he had been heading home after dropping a girl off when he stopped at a railroad crossing because a train was coming. There was some drunk behind him who obviously figured that they could beat the train through the crossing, so he laid his bumper up against Shorty’s car and pushed. The steam engine was moving right along and scattered both cars and their occupants over the next quarter mile.

Everyone from MMSA who was available went to the funeral. Frank Blixter, Vivian Kralick, Carnie Wollaton and Mel Austin were in Florida and no-one could contact them.^BR1-16
