Summary

Brandy and Shelly check on the Iditarod standings, then go back to the airport to try and get a flight to Nome. The airline Ticket Agent is extremely unhelpful, and sarcastically suggests that Brandy charter a plane instead. Brandy does just that.

The plane she charters has to return immediately to Anchorage, so Shelly gets to go along for the ride in a Learjet. On the trip back, Shelly chats with the pilot, and eventually (over a year later) marries him.

Meanwhile, back in Spearfish Lake, Josh spends the week working in the store, among other things selling a kayak to Glenn Sprow. When Eric Aho walks in looking for a summer job, Josh jumps on the chance to get him helping with manual work in the shop and looking after the dogs.

He gets a brief report from Tiffany who telephones from McGrath that all seems well. Mark Gravengood had given Josh a computer game program that simulate railroads, Josh uses it to run through a number of scenarios for the C&SL which he demonstrates to Bud Ellsberg.

Josh & Joe have a good trip to Canoecopia, making some contacts and getting ideas for the outfitting store.

Once back at the store Josh keeps checking the race details, and starts to get worried that there was no news of Tiffany. Finally her name appears on the Finishers web page, in in ninth place! Josh doesn't notice the front door opening, and it isn't until Joe says something that he realizes a group of his friends are there to celebrate Tiffany's top-ten finish - Mike & Kirsten McMahon, Mark & Jackie Gravengood, Jennifer Evachevski, Blake Walworth, Fred Linder, Greg Mears, Norm Niven, Dave Stitely, Walt & Sarah Archer, Gil & Carrie Evachevski, Bud Ellsberg, and several others.
