Summary
Danny spends some of the long drive back to thinking of the Ashtenfelter girls before turning to speculation of catching up with all he's missed. Some of the changes are obvious as he drives down Central Avenue to his mother's workplace, which isn't where it used to be! He finds it by accident on the route to the appliance store.
As Danny walks into the new Record-Herald building Mike makes a point of welcoming him. He then introduces Danny to the rest of the staff, including Sally Szczerowski, the only other staff member Danny remembers. Danny asks about the prominent portrait and all are surprised he hadn't heard about Brenda or the Carter sisters, after all, Danny has visited multiple times in the last eight years.
Danny's mother finally returns and welcomes him. She sends him off to the appliance store and hopes for an early evening at home to welcome him back.
