Andy Bairnsfether once worked for the Spearfish Lake Record-Herald newspaper, hired as one of a series of young reporters, as was Mike MacMahon.

As was typical of the junior reporters, after a few years of learning the ropes, he moved on to better opportunities in bigger towns.

Andy is introduced in the book Busted Axle Road as an investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times and possibly the most successful alumni, at least until Brenda Hodunk arrives.
