Summary
After John and Debby's wedding in September business slows at the Channel Stop but fishing keeps Jake busy enough through October.
Jake feels the loss of the women who have been in his life: Debby married, Susie gone to Chicago, Annette back in college, and Barb not visiting him in the evenings. He realises he does want a permanent relationship but doesn't know where to look.
With the first ice in November Jake gets Pixie out of the water and onto her trailer, covered and settled for winter.
John suggests Jake could take Pixie down to Florida to sail round during the winter. Nate and Barb both say they don't have enough work to keep him round Winchester for the winter and encourage him to go and enjoy his time. they keep the plan from Rachel thinking she might try to stow away with him.
Jake called home on Thanksgiving to report in, and then called the Channel Stop where he spoke to Barb and then Rachel. Rachel made it clear how upset she was not to be with him closing with "you better come back next spring so we can go somewhere in the Pixie. After I get out of school, you’d better not be leaving me behind like that again!”
