Characters

Summary

They had to return the Chinook III to fishing configuration for the next day's customers. Jake and Rachel handled that day, but Nate and Rachel took the day after. Jake and Rachel spent an off day on Gull Island, spending several hours discussing how their lives will be different without Marge. Mostly Jake listened as Rachel works things out.

Both Annette and Wayne were packing to return to college. Rachel had to return to school the following week, and Wayne and Annette drove downstate to college. That left things very short-handed at the Channel Stop.

The Labor Day weekend was busy as usual, with a lot of people taking their boats south. The fact that Wayne and Annette returned to work the three days made all the difference. The Labor Day rush of southbound boats continued on into the following week but Jake was mostly out in the Chinook III with Nate.

A few weeks later Nate asked Jake to do a delivery of a Cal 30 sailboat to Waukegan. After some back-and-forth discussion on crewing both the Chinook and the Cal, with Rachel in school, it was decided that Jake and John would do it - as long John was back in time for his wedding to Debbie.

A couple days later, John, Nate, and Jake were up at the harbor, getting the Cal 30 ready to go. The first two nights they anchored in small harbors. The weather turned sour the third day and they spent the third night in Manitowoc harbor bobbing up and down. It was still blowing hard the next day and they decided to stay put. It was a couple of days before they could leave. Mostly they sat and discussed topic after topic, in a waterfront restaurant, a bar and onboard the boat.

When they could leave they put the sails up and made good time, and a couple of days later dropped off the boat in the marina at Waukegan.

The trip back started with the commuter railroad into Chicago, where Jake made a phone call, then another commuter train to South Bend, where Jake's father was waiting, and he took them back to Jake's folks house in Wychbold for the night. John dozed and Jake caught up on the family gossip on the ride to the house, and then to Winchester Harbor the next day.

The wedding was the following Saturday, and as promised John was there, he was vertical, he was tux'ed and he was sober. Susie and Annette were there along with Nate, Rachel, Barb and everyone else from the Channel Stop. The wedding was outdoors on the putting green at the golf course, the reception was held inside the clubhouse.

There was some socializing after the formal part of the reception, and Jake got a chance to talk with Susie for a bit. Things wound down and John and Debbie took off for a mini-honeymoon.
