Nate Kunkle is a major character in the book Winchester Harbor, Book One of the Full Sails Series.
Nate is the owner and operator of a fishing boat charter business in Winchester, Michigan. His wife is Marge, who has heart problems and is off-screen for a good part of the book. His son Mike is an aviation ordnance man in the Navy and has no interest in running a fishing boat. His daughter Rachel is fifteen and would rather be out on the boat with her dad than in school.
He "borrows" Jake Lewis from the owner / operator of the Channel Stop Barb deRuyter to crew on his boar now and then.
In Winchester Harbor Chapter 35 Rachel reveals to Jake Lewis that Mike is her half brother (same mother), and Susie is her half-sister (same father).
“I don’t know all the details,” she sighed. “But Dad and Mom and Barb and Sam were close friends for like forever. I’m still not quite sure how it worked out, but back years ago before they got married, I guess there was some kind of a falling out. Mom was with Sam for a while, and Barb was with Dad. They both got pregnant about the same time, but before they discovered it, they got back to the way things were supposed to be. I guess they still stayed close after that, and again, real close, up till Sam died.”
Following Marge's death Barb deRuyter spent a lot of time with Nate and they eventually married one September weekend.WH36
Nate and Barb bought a campervan and took an extended road trip the summer after Amanda Lewis turned twenty-one and got her "six-pack" licence to skipper a boat with paying customers. This meant Amanda would be on the skippers' rota at least two days out of three, and put the final nail in her fantasy of sailing to Blanche Tickle with Adam Caldwell on Moonshadow.RD18
