Barbara "Barb" deRuyter is introduced in the first chapter of the book Winchester Harbor as the owner of the Channel Stop - a combination marina / snack bar / fuel dock / motel at Winchester Harbor.
Winchester Harbor is Book One of the Full Sails Series.
At the time we meet her, she is a widow, her husband Sam had a fatal heart attack. The mortgage insurance paid off the Channel Stop. Even so, it's still a struggle to make ends meet.
They had two daughters Susie and Annette, both are college students, and roommates in the dorms. They help out during school vacations.
Barb employs Debby Jeppsen as a cook.
In Chapter 15 of Winchester Harbor it's revealed that Nate Kunkle was the one who heard and then told Barb and Sam that the Channel Stop could be bought, and he and Marge helped buy it and get their feet on the ground. It's also revealed that she hasn't had a man since Sam died.
In Winchester Harbor Chapter 35 Rachel Kunkle reveals to Jake Lewis that Mike is her half brother (same mother), and Susie is her half-sister (same father).
“I don’t know all the details,” she sighed. “But Dad and Mom and Barb and Sam were close friends for like forever. I’m still not quite sure how it worked out, but back years ago before they got married, I guess there was some kind of a falling out. Mom was with Sam for a while, and Barb was with Dad. They both got pregnant about the same time, but before they discovered it, they got back to the way things were supposed to be. I guess they still stayed close after that, and again, real close, up till Sam died.”
Following Marge's death Barb spent a lot of time with Nate Kunkle and they eventually married one September weekend.WH36
