Summary

The rest of the summer moved on quickly. Mostly the days were routine, however things slowed down as schools around the state went back into session. Susie and Annette left first, a week before the Labor Day weekend, their old Camaro packed to the top. This was probably going to be Susie’s last year in college, so it was anyone’s guess whether she’d be home the next summer. Annette had three years to go, and possibly more, and it was unknown if she would be around another summer. Wayne left a day or so later. With the three of them gone, the crew around the Channel Stop had dwindled to just Barb, Debby, and Jake, and one of the big weekends of the summer was coming.

Worse, Rachel went back to school the following Monday. The only thing that made it go easier was that she now had a driver’s license. Since Marge was rarely able to drive anymore Rachel could take the car to school, saving her close to an hour on the bus each way, all of it time she wouldn’t have to put up with Darryl and his posse.

Labor Day weekend - the last gasp of summer for practical purposes - was frantic as almost every boat that had been brought north in the spring was headed south and many stopped for fuel. They survived only because Wayne made a quick trip home to work those three days.

By early October Jake was down to working at the Channel Stop a few hours on each weekend. Crewing with Nate made up the financial difference, but salmon season would close at the end of the month. Jake had no idea what he'd do over the winter... one option was to move on... maybe to Florida, maybe back to the Navy. There was nothing holding him in Winchester.

One evening in early October the situation was resolved when Barb sat sown with Jake and presented her problems - Marge was slowly sinking, not getting better, and Nate is having trouble dealing with it. Barb was spending a lot of time helping her at Marge's home when Nate was at work. In short, Barb outright asked if he'd stay over during the winter in exchange for room and meals and what work she could give him, like shoveling snow. Yes, things wold be slow but he could help Nate on his winter projects, but considering Marge he’s not sure he’s going to be up for doing much. Jake agreed to stay over the winter.

She also touched on the fact that the girls and Debby hadn't had a word of complaint about him being their resident stud. And it had been years since Barb had a man to love, to cuddle, or to go to bed with. He pointed out that he never asked either Debby or Susie or Annette. They always came to him and that’s part of the reason they all got along as well as they did. He then told her that if she were to ask, she wouldn’t get turned down - and that she'd find out how bad that mattress really is!
