Summary
It was Friday evening before the bus got them back to Winchester. At breakfast the next morning Jake had the distinct impression from her that she’d rather still be out on the water, traveling somewhere. Nate commented that he was glad the trip had gone smoothly. While nothing was said, apparently he thought Jake had done well and was worthy of his trust.
But it was back into the routine of fueling boats, helping Debby in the kitchen in the mornings, and other odds and ends. A few days later there was a 16th birthday party for Rachel, complete with a Debby-made cake. They did the whole birthday thing, with blowing out the candles, presents for the birthday girl, cutting the cake, and all. Marge was looking tired, so as soon as things slowed down a little Nate took Rachel and her home, and that was pretty much that.
Over the next few months Jake worked a lot of hours, plus crewing the occasional fishing charters with either Nate, or both Nate and Rachel.
One evening while things were slow Susie stuck her head out of the snack bar and told Jake that he had a phone call. Well, Jake had never received one phone call since he showed up at Winchester Harbor, not even from Nate to see if he could crew the next day.
Sure enough, it was Lisa, all right. She tried to hide the real reason for her call with questions about Jake, or updating him on family news. Shortly, however, the real reason for the call showed - she obviously wanted to talk about Brittany. Things went downhill fast, and the call ended with hard feelings on both sides.
Susie had overheard Jake's end of the call and counseled against cutting himself off from his entire family. A discussion followed, including the topics of Lisa going away to college, and what he'd be doing during the winter, and where.
