Sam deRuyter was the husband of Barb deRuyter who had died of a heart attack about three years before the start of Winchester Harbor . They had two daughters: Susie and Annette.
In high school Sam and Barb had been close friends with Nate and Marge, a foursome who were always hanging around with each other. After school Sam had worked at one of the GM plants downstate and had got Barb a job there too for ten or twelve years until the plant closed and they got laid off.
They sold their house downstate and bought the Channel Stop with help from Barb's dad. They hadn't had anyone to show them around but managed. When Sam had his heart attack the mortgage insurance enabled Barb to keep going.WH2
In Winchester Harbor Chapter 15 Barb tells Jake Lewis that they'd moved back to Winchester "... as much because we missed Nate and Marge as anything else. In fact, Nate was the one who heard and then told us that the Channel Stop could be bought, and he and Marge helped us buy it and get our feet on the ground.”
In Winchester Harbor Chapter 35 Rachel Kunkle tells Jake “... back years ago before they got married, I guess there was some kind of a falling out. Marge was with Sam for a while, and Barb was with Nate. They both got pregnant about the same time, but before they discovered it, they got back to the way things were supposed to be. I guess they still stayed close after that, and again, real close, up till Sam died.” Susie was actually Nate Kunkle's daughter and Mike Kunkle was actually Sam's son.WH35
