Summary
Short of drivers for the coming season Spud asked the Chenowith brothers for contacts. They recommended and sent four drivers.
Buck Jacklin who had run in 1949 came back to MMSA just in time to start the season.
Spud and Frank gave rookie Dewey Blodgett a trial during pre-season testing and then offered him a drive.
In Marked Tree, Arkansas the consolation race was rained off and everyone was in vehicles when it turned to hail in strong winds. The hail broke glass in some of the vehicles before they heard a roaring like a big diesel freight train as a tornado went past about 100 yards away, taking the grandstand with it.
The manager of a local junkyard opened on the Sunday and they found replacement glass for all but one vehicle.
In Wahoo, Nebraska they listened to the radio coverage of the Indianapolis 500 where Runt Chenowith came in fourteenth.
