Bonnie Halfsteader was a pretty good looking woman. She had graduated from the University of Michigan and taught English at the school where Mel Austin substituted as auto shop teacher January to March 1952.
She lived with a girl friend, Louise, in Dearborn.
At first Bonnie ignored Mel but took an interest when she realised he'd be leaving in early April at the latest. They dated about once a week for two months.
Mel realised years later that Bonnie and Louise were lesbians and he'd been a beard to settle the rumour mill at school.
