Location
- Malvern Hill, the farm of Bert Woodward
Characters
- Bert and Laura Woodward
Summary
Emily goes to visit the farm with the Civil War cannon. With recent snowfall, the roads are questionable enough that she has Jason drive her out in his truck. Bert, the farm owner, has plowed the county road leading to his farm, as its practically a private drive and "the county never does". They are also introduced to Bert and his wife and guided about the farm.
A World War II era cannon sits out front and introduces Bert's plans that include a Museum. He has a Sherman tank sitting in one barn. Other pieces include a 37mm antitank gun, parts to a Trebuchet and one Civil War cannon. He explains another matching cannon will arrive in the spring and they hope for two more in coming years for better Civil War Reenactments.
While the Civil War reenactments are growing in popularity, the Woodwards also expect pumpkin throwing with the Trebuchet and air cannons to attract interest. They shoot off the cannon while Emily takes pictures. Although loud, Emily and Jason leave the farm grinning.
As the two return to town, they talk about Lloyd's sneakiness in getting Emily to write an article that will defuse criticism. They find the potential of the Museum attractive and hope it works out.
Discussion then turns to Vicky and her troubles. Emily works hard to ensure Jason will be supportive of her, implying depth to a friendship without asking Jason directly. Jason's thoughts conclude that between Emily and Vicky's mother and Vicky's own crying jag earlier in the week, Jason reevaluates his relationship.
The recognition has started that Vicky isn't the little girl he met years earlier.
