Characters
Summary
Duane and his father hike to the top of Mount Katahdin and the start of the Appalachian Trail. When they return to the bottom, Duane will continue on his own while Jason returns to Bradford. The events that get the pair to this point are briefly touched upon. The significance of their upcoming separation has both men reflecting on the past and possible futures. They talk about Duane's step mother and biological mother and he asks Jason why he never married. Duane assures his dad that he wouldn't mind if something develops with Vicky. As Jason tries to minimize things, Duane points out the most important lesson from Christine, "you have to do what you want when you can, because the time may come when you can't".
After hiking down, breaking apart becomes difficult. After a few more words to each other, and a handshake turned into a hug, they go their own way, Duane starting his adventure and Jason feeling proud of his job in raising his son.
