Zivah was a Sephardic Jew. "Her mother is an Iraqi Jew, born in Baghdad, and came on the Iraqi aliyah to Israel a year or two after the War of Independence, she was maybe seventeen or eighteen. Most immigrants to Israel went through classes to teach them modern Hebrew, and she met my grandfather in one of them. He was Mexican, a Catholic, of course, and came to Israel as a water well driller."DM2 Her father converted and they raised their daughter in the Israeli schools. She won a scholarship to the University of Nebraska where she met Bob Lambert. "I think they hit it off mostly because they were about the same skin color in a place that was pretty white. From what I understand, they moved in with each other within hours of meeting, and didn't get married until I was just about to be born."DM2
Their child is Sonja Lambert. When Sonja was two years old, the Yom Kippur War broke out and as Zivah was a reservist, she went to Israel in support, leaving Sonja with her father.HS17 She ended up staying, earning a commission in the Israeli Defense Force and the couple divorced. Sonja visited her mother for the summer vacation when she was fourteen.DM2
under Israeli law, Sonja is Jewish and has a dual citizenship. Without Sonja’s knowledge, her mother registered her and got her an Israeli passport. When Sonja "got to Michigan State her freshman year, when she received a draft notice from the IDF"DM2 Zivah traveled to the United States to convince her daughter to do her duty, but instead Sonja got married to Scott Tyler and declined.DM12
Zivah reconciled with her daughter and later the couple visited Israel with their friends Aaron and Amber Heisler. "Zivah had booked us into this real nice beachfront hotel but didn't tell us that it was a topless beach."HS17
