Zack Reeves was a coastguard friend of Ron Lewis who helped Amanda Lewis work on Rag Doll. Sandy haired, with a round face and a little shorter than Ron Lewis.^RD7

He had never seen the ocean or been aboard a boat of any kind until he started his Coastguard basic training. He enjoyed playing with Beffy the kitten and said he missed having a cat around.^RD11

He'd had to visit Clinton City after his dad was killed in prison and visited Winchester Harbor to speak to Amanda Lewis. He confided to Amanda that one night when he was fifteen his dad was drunk and beat his mum before raping his twelve year old sister. Zack had snuck out of the house to call the cops from a neighbor's house but got a lot of static from school mates, teachers and others round town for not actively intervening. When his dad was sent to prison he was sent to a foster family in Clinton City who also got onto him about not protecting his sister - she'd been moved to Colorado to help her get over the rape. When he turned eighteen, about two months before graduating high school, the foster family threw him out because they weren't being paid for him anymore. He lived rough so he could graduate and left for the Coastguard recruiting office in Denver as soon as he'd picked up his high school diploma. With that secret out between them he and Amanda got closer to each other.^RD23

He had plenty of leave available and booked six weeks in January and February so he could go sailing with Amanda. They agreed it was just a vacation together and couldn't become anything permanent because of their different goals and work commitments.^RD27 At the end of the six weeks neither of them believed that but couldn't see a way to be together.^RD33

Zack asked Chief Barnes about his options and with his help arranged to transfer to the Coast Guard Reserve at Cheboygan in June when his enlistment ran out. He fitted in a visit to Cheboygan with a side trip to Winchester Harbor while Amanda was waiting for suitable weather to cross from the Bahamas to Ft. Pierce in Florida. He arranged to work for the Lewis family on the fishing boats and at the Channel Stop. When he told Amanda she invited him to share her motel room while they decided whether they could fit their lives together.^RD34
