Summary
When they were alone on the beach Zack slowly told Amanda about his family. That his dad had beaten his mother so she died and had raped his sister who was twelve at the time. When his dad was sent to prison Zack was put with a foster family in the same town. Kids at school, teachers, the foster family and others in the town gave him a hard time for not taking direct action instead of going to a neighbor's and calling the cops.
Once that was out between them the wall of reserve from Zack came down and he was a lot more relaxed around Amanda. The reservations about taking the relationship further were now Amanda's because she didn't want to change her life to move wherever the coastguard posted him.
Jake asked Zack if he'd run Chinook as Amanda's deckhand because Samantha had reached her limit of hours for the week. He agreed, saying it would be much like being on a patrol boat with a female chief.
Before he left Amanda held out the possibility of them getting closer when she was in Florida with Rag Doll that winter. She suggested he get a passport as "the Bahamas aren't out of the question".
