Summary

The cold of winter arrived shortly after the first of the year, after Susie and Annette were back at college. The channel was now iced over hard, precluding any boating activity. The Coast Guard classes for the six-pack license were completed, the paperwork done, and the ticket showed up in the mail a few days later. That took a big load off Nate’s mind.

The boat work over at Nate’s shed continued, with the majority of the time spent on the old Chris-Craft, with additional time on the Parabellum. The end of the January saw the sailboat's deck bonded to the hull. They made a few modifications during the construction, like adding the extra fittings to fly a spinnaker. Since she was quite a bit smaller Rachel helped in the cramped spaces on both the Chris-Craft and the Parabellum.

One day a discussion took place on what to name the Parabellum. After a few ideas were shot down, she came up with the name Pixie since it would be small, light and with the extra sails, lively.

A few days later Lisa phoned Jake. After some small talk her agenda showed up - Brittany and Lisa had a long talk, and she admitted a few things. Lisa had called to apologize, and to relay the news that Brittany had broken up with the man she was seeing, and wanted to get back with Jake. The answer was She lost that chance when she went to bed with that guy, whoever he is. It took more time to get off the phone, and he hung up with relief.

The work on the Chris-Craft and the Pixie continued. Nate and Jake were still finding things on the Pixie they thought were cheesy and tried to do them better. One of the problems was going to be getting up and down the channel, but that was solved when Nate arranged a swap of some old gear for an old ten-horsepower (7.5kw) Evinrude outboard.

The chapter ends with But, the channel and the harbor were still full of ice, and spring still seemed far away.
