Summary

March opened up with a warm spell. Nate and Jake continued working on the Chris-Craft. Jake made a trip to Bradford and picked up the rebuilt Ford flathead engine, which they installed. The next project was the pre-season maintenance and cleaning of the Chinook III, which was too big for the shed and was stored under tarps outside.

The warm days continued until the channel was open.  Barb and Jake prepared the fuel dock for the season.

Towards the end of the month there was a particularly nice day, and by chance Rachel had a short school day. Jake and Nate decided to see if the Pixie was a boat or "shed jewelry". By the time Jake was done working the snack bar lunch shift Rachel was home. Jake trailered the Pixie to the launch ramp, and she tasted first water.

To make a long sail a short story, the boat was fine and they sailed it out onto the big lake for a while, and then back to the dock - they never fired up the outboard.

Jake and Nate finished the Chinook III over the next couple of weeks, and it went back into the water. Fishing season opened on the first of the month, and that meant business. The test run went well, and they cleaned and made ready all of the fishing gear.

Somewhere along Jake sat down with Barb and they discussed staffing issues - for one Susie wouldn't be around for the season, and Jake would be replacing Nate on many fishing charters. Barb found and hired Laura, a combination waitress, motel staffer and occasional fuel dock helper.
