Summary

The day of the wedding was cool, but promised to get warmer as the day went on, and things were projected to be warmer at Lee's Ferry. Everyone was assembled at the Canyon Tours parking lot, all of them casually dressed. Nicole had a brief word with Scooter, thanking her again for making things right for Randy's Bahamas vacation.

Crystal and Noah lead the procession to Lee's Ferry, with the crew bus next, followed by the other cars. Jeff lets the bus fall behind, and when they get to the turnoff for Lee's Ferry, the bus continues. They stop at a motel, where Karin had rented all the available rooms for a couple of hours. Everyone changed into more elegant clothes; Scooter even put on a dress, for the first time since sixth grade. The bus drove back and down to Lee's Ferry. When Crystal saw everyone dressed up, she realized that she'd just been had -- big time, and knew that Karin was behind it. She was unhappy that she was going to be the only one in jeans, but Al and Mark Jordan come up with Louise's wedding dress and Noah's suit. Preach and Crystal were married to the tune of harp and guitar in the open air beside the river that led through what most of them thought was the greatest cathedral on earth.

After Pastor Jordan had pronounced them man and wife, he asked Noah and Crystal to change places with Jim and Scooter. He then proceeded directly into a second marriage ceremony, to the surprise of everyone else except Karin, who had helped with the planing.

Afterwards, Scooter said "I would have liked to have seen Crystal's face. I could just about hear her eyes get wide as saucers."

Randy was worried that the sailboat trip would be off again, because he hadn't wanted to horn in on Crystal and Noah's honeymoon, and now thought that the other half of the trip would be a honeymoon for Scooter and Jim. Scooter tells him that will not be the case; there will be six of them on the boat, and in any event, she and Jim are heading to Mexico the next day for some time by themselves; not sure that they will be back much before Christmas.

This is the final chapter of River Rat.
