Summary

Things are slow the next morning at the Clark Construction office, so when Ryan calls over and asks Randy to stop by his office at Clark Plywood he has no problems leaving.

A few minutes later Randy walks into Ryans office. After a short discussion Ryan has Randy sign the stock transfer paperwork, and hands him the forms for Nicole to sign. More discussion ensues and Randy comments that he needs to learn more about the nuts and bolts of this place so I’ll be familiar with it when the time comes. Right now while it’s slow is a good time to get started at it. Ryan replies ... I know you tend to get yourself buried in things, and right now it’s probably not a good idea.

They discuss the pellet mill and where to build it - Rochester or Spearfish Lake - and other concerns. Ryan would like Randy to spend a week or two of half-days at Clark Plywood to review the existing plans, especially from the construction angle, in case something has been missed. He's also like Randy to spend some time at the pellet plant to make sure he understands the operation.

Ryan then makes a point: I know you too well. You’ll bury yourself in it like you do in projects at the construction company. Plus, remember that you have a wife, a child on the way, and friends who don’t need to be neglected either. One of the things you’re going to have to learn is how to budget your time on stuff like this, and you’ve never done very well at that.

After a few hours Randy leaves for home, and finds Nicole, Preach and Crystal, Danny and Debbie, Myleigh and Trey. They are discussing Al and Karin's summer trip, Preach and Crystals schedule, and their plans for next winter.

The next morning Nicole was in the classroom when Myleigh, Trey and Randy saw Crystal and Preach on their way. He commented ...even as friends as good as they’ve been, we’re drawing apart. I don’t like it, but that’s the way life works.

Later on that morning Randy was in his office when Carlos came in to discuss a few things. Norm is happy with the documents that Carlos dropped off.

Randy then changes the subject to the future. Randy will be spending considerable time at Clark Plywood, and Carlos's responsibilities will increase. One example is an evaluation of where to go with the existing grader and an expensive laser-guided blade control system. It's needed when doing things like large parking lots, but eighty percent of the existing graders work is maintaining logging roads. So do they upgrade a 25 year old grader, or buy a new one with the system already installed? Do they trade in the old one, sell it, or keep it as a spare?

Randy again changes the subject to point out that they will need a management intern for the summer, and that Carlos needs to slide up to NMU and see what you can do about finding one? I’ve been away from there longer than you have. Whoever you choose you’re going to have to live with since for the most part he’s going to be your assistant.

He then comments that As my responsibilities to Clark Plywood grow, I’m going to have to shove more of this onto you. It may not happen soon, but keep in the back of your mind that you could be running this place someday. I don’t think soon, but we never know ... it’s a family business ... and there ain’t a hell of a lot of family. With Brent gone, there’s one less.
